Blossoming into Summer!

Springtime is very special in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. It’s when families and friends emerge from a long cold winter to welcome in warmth, new beginnings, and blossoms! The Japanese cherry trees look to paint the Tidal Basin with beautiful delicate pink and white puffs of color, while swaying their blossoms in the soft spring breeze. Paddle boats pepper the waters in front of the Jefferson Memorial, welcoming locals and tourists alike to witness this historic annual display. Watch kite fliers from around the world participate in competitions, demonstrations, and the Rokkaku Battle and Hot Tricks Showdown in front of the Washington Monument at The Blossom Kite Festival. The sky becomes filled with more kites than birds, filling The Mall with color and life.

Pop the cork, sip and savior some of our local splendor at any of our 230 wineries that stretch across our state. April kicks off the wine festival season which always culminates large crowds. “Virginia is one of the only wine destinations in the country where visitors can kayak to a winery, enjoy bluegrass music while sipping local wines, sample regional wines at a National Park, or enjoy wine at a National Historic Landmark.” ( Many Virginia wineries welcome all the loves of your life, your furry friends will have a smashing time at Barrel Oak Winery, Chateau Morrisette, Keswick Vineyards, and Three Foxes as our top picks.

Established in 1939, The National Cathedral Flower Mart showcases floral exhibits from many Embassies’ and local garden enthusiasts. The Flower Mart features annuals, perennials, landscape exhibits, garden tours, entertainment, tasty foods, family activities, Cathedral Tower climbs, and a century-old restored carousel for all to enjoy. The National Cathedral grounds are stunning with many well-manicured gardens perfect for photographs or just smelling the roses.

Lions and dragons oh-my! Listen to the beat of the drum, bear witness to remarkable teamwork, and the fastest growing water sport in the US. Every May the Potomac River hosts the Ancient Chinese tradition of Dragon Boat racing, harkening back 2500 years to the banks of the Yangtze River. Eye-Dotting awakens the sleeping dragons and provides good spirits for the boats and racers. Tradition is as tradition does, ….catch a lion by its tail…..if you can!

Springtime brings forth new beginnings coupled with a warm breeze and the sweet hypnotic allure of nature.  We look forward to seeing you among the blossoms this spring!

Encore is excited to announce the success of one of our favorite Dress Department interns.  She came to us with a theatrical background looking to broaden her scope in costume design and refurbishment.  We have recently learned she has been hired as a member of the traveling wardrobe department for Disney’s, The Lion King. Wishing her much success and feel her training here at Encore was invaluable!
